Dean's Message
Welcome to the School of Medicine, Life and Health Sciences (short as “MED | LHS”), the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHK-Shenzhen)!
The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen officially announced the establishment of the School of Life and Health Sciences on November 14th, 2018, which is the fourth school of CUHK-Shenzhen, offering educational programs from baccalaureate to graduate degrees. Since its establishment more than a year ago, the School has been developing rapidly with a growing faculty, which has attracted many outstanding young scholars and students to join us in exploring the mysteries of life.
The School will adhere to the “Through learning and temperance to virtue” motto of the Chinese University of Hong Kong for education and training of innovative talents with rigorous thinking, broad vision and multidisciplinary knowledge. At present, the School has four majors open for undergraduate admission, including Bioinformatics, Biomedical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Science, and Biological Sciences. All majors are taught in English. Undergraduate students will be able to choose their course of study soon after admission and will choose their final major by the end of the first year after one year developing their academic interests. All School faculty will participate in teaching and guiding students directly .
On the basis of the characteristics of MED | LHS, the School provides a large number of research and internship opportunities for undergraduates. The three Nobel Institutes will open for undergraduates and students are welcomed to carry out scientific research projects. Meanwhile, School will provide students with a wealth of summer internships, social practice and overseas exchange opportunities. CUHK-Shenzhen has signed agreement with over 100 international partners, and School has selected prestigious universities related to life and health sciences among which, and has developed joint degree programmes in various collaboration forms, such as 3+2, 3.5+1.5.
The School has offered MPhil-PhD Programme in Biological Sciences and MSc Programme in Bioinformatics. So far, all enrolled postgraduate students have received either University Scholarship or the support from "Gang Hong Young Scholars Development Fund". Studying at CUHK-Shenzhen, postgraduate students acquire knowledge and skills in the classroom and in the laboratory. On the other hand, they can develop the ability to teach and mentor undergraduates, laying a solid foundation for the long-term development of their academic careers.
While carrying out basic research in life sciences, the School is actively involving in the development of the School of Medicine. In addition, LHS will be responsible for the pre-clinical courses teaching of the School of Medicine. With the mission of expanding the life and health sciences disciplines, the school will promote the development of biomedical engineering, pharmaceutical science and other interdisciplinary disciplines in CUHK-Shenzhen through the development of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
In terms of scientific research, the establishment of the School will facilitate the integration of research activities at the Arieh Warshel Institute of Computational Biology, Kobilka Institute of Innovative Drug Discovery, Ciechanover Institute of Precision and Regenerative Medicine, in their respective disciplines to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and create synergy. Aligned with the research directions of the three Nobel Institutes, the School of Medicine, Life and Health Sciences will take the lead in breakthroughs in the fields of bioinformatics, drug discovery, precision and regenerative medicine, and expand into other areas of life and health research. Kobilka Cryo-Electron Microscopy Center has been operating normally with two 300 kv cryo-electron microscope units since its official opening in July 2019. Since its establishment one year ago, MED | LHS has made gratifying progress in discipline construction, hardware facilities and transformation research. At the same time, MED | LHS has successfully applied for the "Greater Bay Area Biomedical Innovation and Research Center" project, which will establish a new type of research and development institution in the Futian free trade zone with the purpose of "innovative scientific research service".
The School of Medicine, Life and Health Sciences welcomes students who are interested in exploring the mysteries of life and promoting human health. The School also encourages academic researchers who are willing to join our team to learn more about us and apply for open related positions. Let us work together and jointly build a life and health science school with distinctive academic features and international reputation!
