      The application of MPhil-PhD Degree Program in Biological Sciences for 2020 has started. New students may enter the degree program in September or January of the following year.

MPhil-PhD Degree Program in Biological Sciences

The MPhil-PhD Program in Biological Sciences aims to educate and cultivate research students with a broad foundation in Biological Sciences, with specialized knowledge in selected areas. They are expected to become leading academics and researchers in universities, research institutes, and industries with research concentrations in biochemistry, cell biology, cancer biology, immunology, neurobiology, pharmacology, genetics, human genetics, biophysics, developmental biology, and/or computational and systems biology.

The Program in terms of course design and content, training methods and research direction are benchmarked with similar programs at CUHK, UC Berkeley, and MIT.  The course requirements of this program are closely benchmarked against similar MPhil-PhD programs in life science-related fields in CUHK, such as Molecular Biotechnology, Biochemistry, or Cell and Molecular Biology. The degree program includes up to 2-3 semesters of classroom learning, paying special attention to the breadth of knowledge and the ability of the students to solve problems.

Application conditions

       Applicants who have already received Master’s degree should apply for the admission to the PhD program, while applicants with only Bachelor’s degree should apply for the admission to either MPhil or PhD program. Applicants should have education background in biological sciences, chemical sciences and/or related disciplines. Applicants should also demonstrate good command to English.

Scholarship Introduction

1、President Scholarship receive a 180,000/year living allowance.

2、PGS Scholarship I is waived for full tuition fees. To serve part-time teaching assistant and/or research assistant will receive an additional monthly stipend about 5,000 yuan.

3、PGS Scholarship II is waived for half of the tuition fees. To serve as part-time teaching assistant and/or research assistant will receive an additional monthly stipend  about 5,000 yuan.

4、Other

The development and student training of the School of Life and Health Sciences have received extensive attention and support from all walks of life. The first social funding-ten million yuan received by the College in 2019 came from the "Ganghong Young Scholar Development Foundation", which was donated by Changhong Public Welfare Foundation.  It is used to support outstanding young scholars  of the School of Life and Health Sciences of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) S, including providing part of research funding, project development funding, and doctoral as well as postdoctoral training funding, etc., dedicated to the growth and development of young scholars Provide support to promote the development of scientific research in the field of life and health sciences at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen), to form a good interaction between clinical enterprisesand university research, to explore and incubate a batch of  achievements in the frontiers of the biotechnology industry.

Q&A

一、What are the requirements for a professional background application in the MPhil-PhD in Biological Sciences Programme?

1. A Master's degree from recognized university category A, 985, 211 for domestic university; or graduated from recognized university and obtained a Bachelor's degree, normally with honours not lower than Second Class or GPA ≥ 3.2 / 4.0 (80/100).

2. The language score must reach a TOEFL score of 550 or higher, an IELTS score of 6.5 or higher, and a GMAT score of 21 or higher.

二、What certificate will be issued upon graduation? Is it nationally recognized?

Issue a degree certificate from the CUHK. Recognized by the state.

三、When is the submission of the application and the start of the school?

Applications are accepted throughout the year and there are two admission seasons in a year: fall (September) and spring (January).

四、What form of assessment is required after applying online?

You do not need to take the National Graduate Examination after applying online. Before you apply, please contact the tutor according to your research background and interests. The tutor will arrange the assessment method independently. Students who pass the tutor assessment and School’s interview will enter the data review and admission stage.

2019 MPhil-PhD Students' Achievements Display

LIANG Shiyu,LI Jing, TANG Yun, HONG Canjian, LI Zhongyan,ZHOU Youli,LIAN Kai and GAN Shiyi,the above 8 students won the 2019 Young Scholars Development Fund of Ganghong Group and received 90,000 yuan per year.

Lian Yun received the " Presidential Fellowship" and received 180,000 yuan grants each academic year.

Paper Publication

Li Jing and Tang Yan, two PhD students in Biological Sciences of our school, participated in the miRTarBase research group of professor Huang Hsienda, and participated in publishing papers in the international top journal Nucleic Acids Research.
